Guess Who Wrote an Essay?

This weekend I did something I never thought I would do, write an essay in two days. Of course, it wasn’t the same as cram writing an essay in a short amount of time because the deadline is quickly approaching. Our final essay isn’t due for weeks but I decided to write it in full over the weekend. It wasn’t a decision that I had finalized Friday night but rather something that just happened. I was feeling behind in my essay work after not learning much from my research and being at a halt until I could read To the Letter by Simon Garfield which Tina recommended to me. I had no clear idea of what I wanted to argue about or even what my evidence should be and that book really cleared that up for me. On Friday night I had picked out all my evidence and knew that over the weekend I would continue to work on the essay alongside my other assignments but it didn’t go that way. I realized after struggling with my other work I was using this essay as a way to distract myself while still being efficient. The only way to stop being distracted as much and commit myself to my work was to get rid of what was distracting me. So, late Saturday afternoon I started writing. I first started with all the topic sentences for each paragraph and then went into analyzing each quote, after that I did the main conclusion and then the sub-conclusions for each paragraph. Once I started writing and put my phone away the process went quite quickly. It’s actually something I really appreciate about these FYS essays, I feel like I’m properly equipped to write them and if I’m not I learn how to be. By no means though was my quick writing process a sign that I’m done though. A part of my analysis still needs work as it’s not as in-depth as I want it to be and I need to revise my thesis to reflect the paper I wrote since the thesis reflects mere ideas not the essay itself. I also need to add in all my citations. What I’m shocked at is that even though I wrote the essay in two days I still feel as good about it as my other ones because I’m not planning on dropping it, rather revising it even more than my others because I know the process for it was quick. Overall, this feels like a good learning experience for me. Teaching me that once I apply myself I can do something and accomplish it even though I think it’s hard but in doing that you need to keep in mind that nothing is perfect and you’re going to have to revise things even if you think they’re completely done. After all, that’s the beauty of writing, even something finished is never done.
