This week our only reading consisted of a story called “The Golden Days. Vol. 1 of The Story of the Stone.” Honestly, it’s a bit hard to recap twenty pages of a story so I’m just going to say what stood out to me. In chapter one there’s a magical rock left behind by the goddess Nüwa and a man called Vanitas took the stone. He decided to take the information the rock had and make it into a passionate/love story. Shin-Yin cared a great deal for his daughter, refusing to give her up even when prompted. Shortly after that he spies a woman outside and believes himself to be her friend. That same woman sees him but decides he’s not worth attention due to his shabby way of dressing. Later Shin-Yin’s house burned down and his daughter died. At the very end of the chapter the woman Shin spotted comes back but this time she can’t recognize Shin because he’s dressed in finer clothes, though she does remark how familiar he seems. In chapter five Bao-yu comes across a fairy who later inhabits his dreams. He finds himself in the land of illusion, somewhere that seems too perfect for any human to be in. There, he comes across the fairy and asks her to guide him home but she takes him deeper into the world, which she describes as a place of passion. He reads some scrolls and is introduced to some of the other fairies there. During a performance Disenchantment (the first fairy he met) remarks how Bao-yu needs to understand what each song means in order to fully appreciate it. I really like that sentiment, it reminds me of how you can’t judge something if you don’t even understand it in the first place. After the performance Disenchantment calls Bao-yu lustful in the mind. At the end of the chapter a girl appears who comments that no one has called her Ke-qing since she was young which makes me wonder if this is Shin-yin’s daughter that died in the first chapter.
With the textbook I’ve completed all of my chapters and sent my list of notes out to the teams that concern them. My partner and I have agreed that once both of us are done with our assigned chapters we’ll go through each other’s just to check over them
Right now on my to do list I don’t really have anything. I’m all caught up and have prepared all the work and assignments I needed to do.
I don’t really have any questions this week, the story was a bit hard to follow in some points though but breaking it down in class really helped.
